According to Soviet reports, in the autumn of 1941 about 5,000 people, apparently mostly Jews, of all ages and both sexes were taken to the city dump, half a kilometer from the old airfield, and were shot there.

...On this day the Commission arrived at the shooting site located, on one side, 5 kilometers from the old airfield and, on the other, 300 meters from the Ovidiopol railway in the direction of Tatarka village, the location of the former city dump.
24 graves covered with a layer of earth were discovered; nearby there were various items of clothing, including women's, men's, and children's shoes....
On the basis of the surface information a limited excavation of 6 graves was carried out. Their total area was 2,536 cubic meters. The excavation of the grave of 1x4 meters revealed 25 skulls. Thus, it should be assumed that more than 200 people were buried in the grave. Therefore, in the opinion of the Commission, the total number of buried bodies was approximately 5,000.
A medical commission established that the mass shooting was carried out by the German and Romanian occupiers using firearms at close range, in some cases at point-blank range. The clothes found on the bodies allows us to assume that the shootings were carried out in the autumn, at the end of October and the beginning of November 1941. Children's shoes and overshoes that were found confirm that those who were shot ranged from infants to adolescents, in addition to a majority of male adults. The bodies of the shooting victims were lying side-by-side, some face-down, scattered haphazardly far and wide....
