On October 22, 1941 Soviet saboteurs blew up the headquarters of the staff of the 10th Romanian Army and the Odessa city commander, causing the deaths of city Commander-General Ion Glogojanu and his entire staff, as well as of several high-ranking German officers. The following day Romanian soldiers took about 18,000 (according to German intelligence sources) Jews to a lumber warehouse in the harbor area and shot them to death. The bodies of the victims were doused with gasoline and burned.
