On August 2 (or 3, according to a Soviet report), 1941, the chief of the newly established Security Police office in Stanisławów, SS-Hauptsturmfuehrer (Captain) Hans Krueger, summoned several hundred Jewish and Polish members of the professional intelligentsia to the security police headquarters on Bilieński Street in the center of the city, ostensibly in order to regulate their professional activities under the German occupation. The Jewish professionals who obeyed this summons were brutally assaulted by Krueger himself and by members of his staff, and many of them were beaten or shot dead inside the building. According to the testimony of Holocaust survivor Fryderyk Nadler, one day, apparently in 1942, the Germans carried out the so-called “meat murder operation” in the Stanisławów Ghetto: The owners of the food stores in the ghetto, which had been permitted to open a short time beforehand, were arrested, taken to the Security Police headquarters, tortured to disclose the identities of their customers, and then shot dead – apparently, on the spot.

…The Gestapo gave permission to open the food stores in the ghetto. A certain number of stores were opened. Their wares were sold on the "Aryan" side [of the city]. One day, Gestapo men burst into these stores, beat the proprietors to a pulp, and took them to the Gestapo headquarters. Under torture, they revealed the names of those who had purchased their wares. Using lists drawn up in advance, the Gestapo officers went through the Jewish quarter house by house, arresting people. About 1,000 persons fell victim to this murder operation. At that time, every other day the bodies of the victims would be removed from the Gestapo [headquarters] and transported in a truck along Bathory Street, to the Jewish cemetery….
