According to one survivor's testimony, apparently in early July 1941, the high school teacher and active member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists Augustina Khomova took a group of about 20 Jewish children to the Old Synagogue, ordered them to desecrate the Torah scrolls, and then shot them inside the synagogue.

…She [Augustina Khomova, a Ukrainian nationalist] took 22 [Jewish] children from the orphanage to the Old Synagogue. There she fed them bread and jam. Then she ordered the children to sing, to dance, and to trample on the holy Torah scrolls; after that she shot them herself…
