... In the month of September 1941 in Golovanevsk village a mass shooting of Soviet civilians – old people, women, and children - was carried out. Prior to the shooting all the civilians were, in an action that was a provocation, ordered to assemble at the Pioneer club building on the pretext of attending a meeting. Those unwilling to come to the club were forced to do so by the police. At the same time, for three days the German Gestapo kept coming in covered trucks and loading the civilians onto te trucks and taking them to the shooting site. The shooting site had been prepared ahead of time 1-1.5 kilometers northwest of Golovanevsk village. The shooting of the civilians was carried out in three locations: the first one was the Volovik Ravine. The people were unloaded from the trucks and forced to kneel in front of the pit. Then they were shot to death from sub-machineguns. The pit was then covered with earth. A total of 570 people, including 167 children, were murdered in this brutal shooting [at the three sites].
