At the end of July 1941 25 Jewish men, members of the intelligentsia, and former Soviet officials were murdered at the brick factory in the Pyatnichany area, on the western outskirts of Vinnitsa.
In early August 1941 between 150 and 350 (according to German or Soviet sources) Jewish members of the intelligentsia were collected on orders of the head of Sonderkommando 4b of Einsatzgruppe C, Guenther Hermann, under the pretext of their being assigned to office work. The assembled Jews were taken to a brick factory in Pyatnichany and shot in a quarry near the factory.

Einsatzgruppe C …In Vinnitsa a search of the town for leading Jews was unsatisfactory. For this reason, the leader of Einsatzkommando 4b resorted to new methods. He called the town's most prominent rabbi ordering him to gather within 24 hours all of the Jewish intelligentsia. He then told the rabbi that they would be required for work. When this first group was judged insufficient, the assembled intellectuals were sent back with the order to collect the remaining intellectuals and to appear with them on the following day. This method was repeated for a third time. In this manner nearly the entire intelligentsia was trapped and liquidated…
