Ukraine (USSR)
In October 1941 the director of the Pavlov Mental Hospital, which was situated on the territory of the former St. Kirill Monastery and, thus, was also known as St. Kirill Hospital, was asked by German security police to submit lists of Jewish patients, whom the Germans were supposedly going to resettle in the Vinnitsa area. After the lists were compiled and submitted, about 300 Jews were separated from the rest of the patients and held in a separate ward, located near the St. Kirill grove, just east of the Babi Yar Ravine. On October 15, 1941 members of Einsatzkommando 5 of Einsatzgruppe C took them in small groups to the grove and shot them to death.

The Jewish patients were to be listed separately, supposedly for their evacuation to the city of Vinnitsa. The hospital staff compiled the lists and transferred them to the Gestapo. After that, the Gestapo ordered the Jewish patients to be put into one of hospital’s wards that was located a distance from the other wards. The Jewish patients were placed in the 8th ward, which was located in a grove near the [other] hospital [buildings]. The patients were kept in this ward for three days. Afterwards, a group of Gestapo officers and soldiers arrived at the hospital and started to take away the patients, according to the lists, in groups of 10-15, to be shot.
