Askaniya Nova was a German colony that became an organized settlement in 1890. By 1939 22 Jews lived and worked there as a part of academic and service staff of the Askaniya Nova biosphere or nature reserve. Askaniya Nova was occupied on September 14, 1941. During the occupation in December 1941, 2 Jews were murdered outside the settlement. In March, 1942, about 200 Jews, both local ones and Jews from elsewhere, were murdered in the area of some sand pits. Askaniya Nova was liberated on October 30, according to other sources October 31, 1943.
