In December 1941 two, apparently Jewish, boys who were students at the Nikolaev vocational school were taken out of Askaniya Nova and shot together with a prisoner of war.

Evgeniya Naumenko, who was born in 1890 and lived in Akaniya Nova during the war years, testified:
I know that two boys were shot in Askaniya, they were students of the vocational school in the town of Nikolaev. According to what some women said, these two boys were Jewish. They were arrested and taken out of Askaniya together with a prisoner of war….in December [1941].
