By March 29, most people who received social benefit or those with some kind of criminal record had been deported. This meant that working people would now also be sent to Chełmno and, according to rumors, chimneysweeps, policemen, firemen, and office clerks would be next in line for deportation. In an entry dated March 29, Józef Zelkowicz wrote in his diary that the ghetto Personnel Department provided a list of 3,000 clerks and Judenrat workers, as well as lower ranking manual laborers, who were liable for deportation.
