By March 21, most social benefit recipients or those with some kind of a criminal record had been deported. This meant that working people would now also be sent to Chełmno and, according to rumors, chimneysweeps, policemen, firemen, and office clerks would be the next in line for deportation. This is confirmed by the letters requesting exemption from the deportations. Thus, Szyja Josef Adamowicz (b. 1911) received the summons for the Transport no. XXVIIII and requested an exemption on the following grounds:

As can be seen in the certificates attached, both my wife and I work in the ghetto: I work as an employee of the Second Department of the Police and in the dangerous isolation services, and my wife works in the bakery no. 58. . . . If, then, employment is the basis of our existence, and the Chairman decided that working people are to remain in the ghetto, there is no reason to deport us. ...
