Murder Story of Wysokie Litewskie Jews at the Wysokie Litewskie Synagogue

Murder Site
Wysokie Litewskie
Poland
According to some testimonies, several dozen Jews from Wysokie Litewskie were shot in February 1942 in a large pit that had been dug next to the synagogue. The bodies were covered with sand while some of the victims were still alive. Apparently more Jews were shot both individually and in smaller groups in other parts of the town at various times. Soviet reports indicate that a total of 320 Jews were murdered the same way near the synagogue and around the town, but the dates of those murder operations are not known.
Josef Charyton, a Polish artist who lived in Wysokie Litewskie during the war years, testified:
In the early February 1942 Jews were shot in various parts of the town. The synagogue was closed. Dozens of the Jews were collected there and shot. A pit had been dug there. Apparently several murder operations were carried out there. The Germans left the murder site soon after that. The bodies were covered with sand while some people were still alive.
