Murder Site
Lysaya Gora near Teberda
Russia (USSR)
On December 14, 1942 Jewish members of the medical staff of the sanatorium that had been evacuated to Teberda, as well as their family members and probably some non-Jewish medical personnel as well, were taken to a trench located one and a half kilometers from Teberda in the area of Lysaya Gora. There the victims were forced to undress and their possessions and valuables were taken from them. They were forced in groups of about 20 to the edge of the pit where they had to kneel and then were shot in the back of the head. The shooting, that was carried out by Sonderkommando 11 (either 11a or 11b), lasted about three hours. Some non-Jewish medical personnel were apparently shot along with the Jews.

From the article by Yuri Loginov "My Pain, Karachay", published in the newspaper "Sotsindustriya," July 14, 1989
Yuri Loginov lived in the "Pioneer" children's sanatorium in Teberda during the war years: Soon all the Jews, young and old, were taken outside the village and shot at the foot of Lysaya Gora. I met the 80 year-old Lidiya Nikolayevna Kalinich, a former nurse at the "Pioneer" [children's] sanatorium. In front of her eyes the Fascists forced the Jewish doctors and the children to "the Carriage," a non-heated sanatorium pavilion that had been part of the former "Scientists' House." 285 people, including about 100 children from the age of 0, were shot on December 14, 1942.
