Murder Story of Nikolayev Jews at the Orekhovskaya Ravine

According to several testimonies, apparently in September of 1941, "Soviet civilians" – evidently Jews - from Nikolayev were taken to the Orekhovaya ravine, several hundred meters from the Nikolayev suburb of Sadki and killed there by machine-gun fire. Unknown are both the dates of these massacres and the number of victims.

…When I was working as a driver of a transport cooperative, starting in September 1941 I would transport wet grain from the cargo harbor. The deep Orekhovskaya ravine is situated near the harbor and I saw German officers and soldiers taking people by truck toward the ravine, unloading them, and shooting them there with submachine guns. In most cases the shooting was carried out during the daytime. A ring of submachine gunners surrounded the ravine and, as soon as the people were unloaded from the trucks, they were forced to run and were shot down on the spot…

From the Testimony of Pyotr Pogorelov, who was born in 1881:

…The trucks [loaded] with Soviet civilians, accompanied by German soldiers and officers, approached the Orekhovskaya ravine, located 500-600 meters from the town of Sadki. After they approached the ravine, the trucks stopped and the Soviet civilians were unloaded from them [and then] were forced to run to the ravine that was guarded by German soldiers. The Germans shot with machineguns at the running people, who were [later] buried in the same ravine…
