On February 28, 1942 an SD unit shot 24 Jews in Der Emes. The victims were shot one by one at an anti-tank trench 500 meters from the northern edge of the village. After the shooting the bodies were stripped, and the residents of Der Emes village were forced to cover the trench. At the end of March 1944, while local residents were digging an anti-tank trench for the German army, the bodies were found and then covered again with earth.

... On July 18, 1944 we the undersigned … established and confirmed the fact that on February 28, 1942 in Der Emes village 24 people of Jewish nationality were shot by German fascist murder squads. They were shot at an anti-tank trench 500 meters from the northern edge of the village. The people were shot one by one at an anti-tank trench. After the shooting the victims were stripped and the residents of Der Emes village were forced to cover the trench. At the end of March, 1944, while people were digging an anti-tank trench for the defense of the German army, all 24 corpses were exhumed and their bones reburied. Therefore, the commission does not see any need for (further) excavation....
