According to an eyewitness, in the winter of 1941/1942 Jews, as well as non-Jews accused of anti-German activity, were taken from Dzhankoy to a place north of Dzhankoy (now this is on the northern outskirts of the town) in the steppe near the Mirnovka River on a the hill (which was leveled in the 1980s) to the site where a gas station is now located. There the victims were ordered to undress, lined up at pits, and shot by members of the Tartar militia. According to the same eyewitness, [some] victims were also taken there in gas vans and their bodies then thrown into the pits.

Alexey Smirnov, who was born in 1930 and lived in Dzhankoy during the war years, testified: Interview by Mikhail Tyaglyi and Tatyana Velichko in 2010
- At this musical school there were members of the SD. Only Tartars were policemen there. They guarded the gate. When they rounded up everyone, they took them there. - You mean Jews? - Also Russians, Communists, whoever was pointed out as a Communist. At night they put everyone in a gas van (it was winter). By the time they arrived at their destination – a hill where there is now a gas station – trenches were waiting for them. I am not sure who dug the trenches. Whoever didn’t die on the way was shot and all of them were buried in the trench. - There was a hill here before and there was a river here. We used to come here in the winter and we could see everything. - Where exactly did they shoot people? - Here. - What did you see? - We saw the shooting: people [the Jews] standing in a line, Tartars [Tartar policement with weapons], and then bursts of machinegun or submachine gun fire. - So you saw them: were there old people, children, men, women? - All of these. - Was anyone wearing a uniform, or were they all civilians? - No uniforms. But they all had to take off their overclothes… - Once you said they were shot and another time you said that they were driven [and killed] in a gas van. Which was it? - Both.... - There was a hill here before and there was a river here.
