Krasnodon
Ukraine (USSR)
Since the Krasnodon County had lain outside the Pale of Settlement prior to the Russian Revolution, Krasnodon had very few Jewish residents. It differed in this respect from other towns in the Voroshilovgrad District. Jews began to settle in Krasnodon in the early 20th century, and in 1939 the town was home to approximately 107 Jews, who made up roughly 0.5 percent of the total population, which stood at 22,287. The Wehrmacht occupied Krasnodon on July 20, 1942. In October that year, sixty Jews were shot in the town park by a German murder squad, which was assisted by the auxiliary police. The Red Army liberated Krasnodon on February 14, 1943.
