Tikhoretsk
Russia (USSR)
Since the town of Tikhoretsk had lain outside the Pale of Settlement in pre-Revolutionary Russia, no Jews lived there before World War II. However, following the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941, the Tikhoretsk County came to house a large number of civilian evacuees, including many Jews. The Wehrmacht occupied Tikhoretsk on August 5, 1942. During the occupation period, German soldiers and local policemen murdered 312 Jews in ditches next to the police station. The Red Army liberated Tikhoretsk on January 30, 1943.
