Arkhangelskaya
Russia (USSR)
The village of Arkhangelskaya was outside the Pale of Settlement during the tsarist period and no Jews lived there before World War II. However, with the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941, Arkhangelskaya County became a destination of civilian flight and evacuation, including of Jews. The Germans captured Arkhangelskaya at the beginning of August 1942. During the first days of the German occupation the new administration of the village ordered the arrest of Jews in Arkhangelskaya. They were rounded up and taken to a community center, where they were held for a month. On September 16, 1942 the Germans took approximately 70 Jews to an airfield near Otradnaya, a village west of Arkhangelskaya and shot to death. The Red Army liberated Arkhangelskaya on January 29, 1943.
