The first Jews settled in Bazar in 1775. The numbered only eight Persons. In 1897 Bazar's 833 Jews comprised approximately 42 percent of the entire population. The Jews in Bazar suffered during the Russian civil war, when the town was the site of several pogroms. In 1939 Bazar had 443 Jews, comprizing 15.1 percent of the total population. German forces occupied the town on August 22, 1941. In September of that year German and local policemen arrested 176 Jews from Bazar, as well as some Jews from the nearby rural areas. These Jews, alongside with several Soviet POWs, were taken in the direction of the town of Korosten. They were shot to death at a clay pit near the road to Korosten. On November 21, 1941 a second shooting took place: 29 Jews were murdered next to the town’s power station. On November 26, 1941 a third murder operation was carried out: seven Jews were shot to death at the Russian cemetery. Bazar was liberated by the Red Army on November 15, 1943.
