The first mention of Jews residing in Dorogobuzh relates to 1648. In 1939 Dorogobuzh's 122 Jews comprised 1.4 per cent of the town's total population. Dorogobuzh was first occupied by the Germans on October 5, 1941 and then liberated by the Red Army on February 15, 1942. Later it was reoccupied on July 7, 1942. The Jews of the town were shot in 1942 in the Yamskoy Ravine. The town was liberated for good by the Red Army on September 1, 1943.
