Jews apparently started to settle in Kokhanovo in the 19th century. During the early Soviet period some local Jews worked in agriculture while others were craftsmen. A Yiddish elementary school operated in the town. In 1926 480 Jews lived in Kokhanovo. The Germans occupied Kokhanovo in July 1941. In September of that year a ghetto was set up in the town. In addition to local Jews, Jews from the village of Galoshevo were also incarcerated in the ghetto. All of the ghetto inmates were murdered in January 1942. Kokhanovo was liberated by the Red Army in the summer of 1944.
