Bobrinets
Ukraine (USSR)
Jews settled in Bobrinets at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1897 Bobrinets' 3,481 Jews comprised 24 percent of the town's total population. During the Russian civil war the Jew of Bobrinets were victims of two pogroms carried out by Ukrainians; 160 people were killed and a substantial amount of property was looted. By 1939 the Jewish population had fallen to 654, .or only 7 percent of the total. A number of Jews managed to escape or be evacuated before the arrival of the Germans, who began killing Jews soon after they occupied the town on August 6, 1941. On August 10 five Jews were collected and shot at an unknown site. The Bobrinets ghetto was established in late December 1941. Most of its inmates were shot in the winter of 1942 on the outskirts of town. In 1942-1943 at least seven children from mixed marriages were shot in the town. Bobrinets was liberated by the Red Army on March 16, 1944.
