Unecha
Russia (USSR)
Unecha was part of the Chernigov Region in the Pale of Settlement. Later, between the years 1882-1903, the Czarist authorities prohibited Jews from living there. In 1926, Unecha was home to 1,409 Jews, who made up 30.5 percent of the total population. The town had a Yiddish library and a Yiddish school. In 1939, there were 1,708 Jews in the town, comprising 12 percent of the population. Unecha was occupied by the Germans on August 17, 1941. The Jews were imprisoned in a ghetto in late December 1941 - early January 1942. A murder operation against the Jews was carried out in March 1942. Unecha was liberated by the Red Army on September 23, 1943.
