Pokrovskoye
Ukraine (USSR)
Jews started to settle in Pokrovskoye in the mid-19th century. In 1897 685 Jews lived in the village, comprising 5.5 percent of the total population. The Jews of Pokrovskoye were agricultural workers, merchangs, or artisans. During the Soviet period many Jews left Pokrovskoye in search of new opportunities in larger cities. In 1939 only 67 Jews, who amounted to one percent of the total population, lived in the village. The Germans occupied Pokrovskoye on October 8, 1941. The Jews of Pokrovskoye were registered almost immediately after the start of the occupation. In the course of 1941-1942 a number of Jews from Pokrovskoye and also Roma (Gypsies), living in the village, were sent to Gulyay Pole, where there was an office of the Security Police and the SD and murdered there. Pokrovskoye was liberated by the Red Army on September 15, 1943.
