Gortenshtadt, also Gortenshtot or Gortenshtat ("City-Garden" in Yiddish) was a Jewish agricultural settlement founded in the 1920s with the support of the American Agro-Joint organization. A kolkhoz named after Molotov operated there in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Most of the Jewish inhabitants of Gortenshtot succeeded in fleeing before the arrival of the German forces. The 15 remaining Jews were murdered on March 19, 1942, together with Jews from neighboring Voyo-Nova (present-day Listovoye), at some wells outside Gortenshtot. Gortenshtot and the surrounding area were liberated by the Red Army in April 1944. In 1948 the village was renamed Zhuravli.
