Yelizovo
Belorussia (USSR)
In 1926 Yelizovo had 90 Jews, most of whom worked at the local glass factory. On the eve of the German occupation several dozen Jewish families lived in Yelizovo. Yelizovo was occupied by the Germans on June 30, 1941. Very few Jews succeeded in leaving the town in time. The Jews were ordered to sew yellow badges on their clothes and had to perform forced labor. Early in January 1942 Jews from Yelizovo were forced into the building of a local club, mistreated, robbed of their warm clothes and, then, in the evening released. The Jews of Yelizovo were killed in four murder operations between July 1941 and April 1942. Some young Jews who were carrying out forced labor were spared in the fourth massacre, but were murdered a short time later. Yelizovo was liberated by the Red Army on June 28, 1944.
