To Conquer the Mountain or Die: The Life of Menachem Begin

The documentary tells the story of Altalena, an Etzel Hagana ship which Hagana men blew up on June 22th, 1948 at Tel-Aviv beach. Three of the founding fathers of Israel were involved in this event: David Ben-Gurion, Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Rabin. Why did Ben-Gurion instruct Israeli soldiers to open fire? Why did Yitzhak Rabin call this day "the blackest day in my life?" The film follows the journey of the Altalena from its departure from the port in France, with 930 man, many of which Holocaust survivors, and ammunition on board.

"עמוד האש" מבוססת על תצלומים וסרטי ארכיון מ-30 ארכיונים בארץ ובעולם, ראיונות עם עדי ראייה, ציורים, וגרפיקה. גרסה זאת של הסדרה היא הגרסה המלאה בת ה- 19 פרקים. קריינות מאת השחקן יוסי בנאי.

סדרת סרטי מקור עם ניצולי שואה בהפקת בית הספר הבינלאומי להוראת השואה ביד ושם. רומן גסלר נולד ב6.2.1937 7 בביילסקו-ביאלה שבדרום פולין להוריו אדוארד ודורה גסלר ולאחיו , אלק ולילי. בשנת 1938 הצטרפה למשפחה אומנת גרמנייה אתנית בשם אלזיבת' ליה הדווגי/Gessler Elisabeth (Leja). משפחת גסלר נמלטה מהעיר מזרחה על פי התקדמות הכוחות הגרמניים ממערב. בדרך לא דרך הצליחה אב המשפחה להביא את ילדיו ואת אליזבת' בסופו של דבר לבוקרשט ברומניה. שם שרדו עד שחרור העיר בידי הצבא האדום. לאחר המלחמה עברו בני המשפחה לוינה, שם סיים רומן את חוק לימודיו. לאחר מכן עלה לישראל , התגייס לצה"ל ואף נלחם במבצע קדש.
