The summer of 1945. Tadeusz, a former Home Army (AK) soldier who lost everything in the war, is journeying across Masuria. He arrives at the home of a German soldier's widow. Rose, who lives alone on a large farm, gives him a cool welcome but lets him stay the night. Tadeusz repays her by helping around the farm. Though she won't admit it, Rose needs protection from looters who keep coming to the farm. Gradually Tadeusz discovers the reasons for her solitude. Amidst a landscape ravaged by war, an impossible love is born between two people from distant worlds.

שורשי הזיכרון - מסע בעקבות שנה אחת 1944-1945 אל מחוזות ילדות שחרבה

ירדנה קצין (תרזה ליפניקר) נולדה בעיירה Bekescsaba בהונגריה, בשנת 1937. בזמן הכיבוש הגרמני, באפריל 1944 גורשה עם הוריה ומשפחתה אל מקום הריכוז של יהודי המקום וכפרי הסביבה במחסן טבק בשולי העיירה. במהרה הועלתה המשפחה אל רכבת הגירוש לאושוויץ. בערב היום השני למסע נפתחו הקרונות ללינת לילה על הרציף בעיר Debrecen. למחרת הועלו שוב המגורשים, ואז נותקה הרכבת באמצעה לשני חלקים, מחצית אחת המשיכה לכיוון אושוויץ והמחצית השניה בה הייתה המשפחה, שינתה כיוון אל גבול אוסטריה למחנה שטראסהוף (Strasshof).

Based on a true story of an event that took place in April 1945 in a small German town. After years of not seeing a train pass through their town, the citizens are surprised to see a cattle train full of concentration camp prisoners. According to the instructions of the SS officers, three carriages are disconnected from the train which continues on. The carriages are guarded by a number of soldiers. Inside are 300 starving prisoners. The film shows the events that happen during three days and focuses on Anna, the young daughter of the local innkeeper. Sobibor Sobibor (Lanzmann)

Claude Lanzmann interviews Sobibor revolt participant and survivor Yehuda Lerner in a style reminiscent of his magnum opus "Shoah". Lanzmann originally met Lerner while working on "Shoah", and decided to dedicate an entire film to the story of the revolt as told by Lerner. As in "Shoah", no archival materials are used, and Lerner's testimony determines both form and content. At the end of the film, Lanzmann's voice is heard reading lists of the names of all of those deported to Sobibor, with the lists on screen. The result is chilling.
