Radecznica, the seat of a municipal administrative district (gmina), is a village in the County of Biłgoraj, Lublin District, some 12 kilometers northwest of Szczebrzeszyn. According to the 1921 census, it was home to fifty-nine Jews, about 10 percent of the local population; at the time the German army entered, in September 1939, the Jewish population stood at 263. By March 1941, following the arrival of Jews from surrounding villages and of others forcibly relocated from farther afield, 437 Jews resided in Radecznica.
According to Polish local witnesses, seven Jews were killed in May 1942 by German policemen from Zamość, and nine in July 1942. The murders should probably be seen within the framework of the killing sprees the Germans embarked on around this time in towns and villages in the area - Szczebrzeszyn, Gorajec, Goraj, Tarnogród - as part of a campaign to create an atmosphere of terror that would facilitate the deportations....
