In 1939, 15,663 Jews lived in Biłgoraj County, in the Lublin District, constituting about 46 percent of the total population. When World War II erupted, there were 498 Jews living in Goraj a small town near the county’s northern boundary, some 24 kilometers northwest of the town of Biłgoraj. The Germans entered Goraj on September 22, 1939, which was the eve of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). The Jews were immediately subjected to robbery, beating and humiliation.
