In 1939, 15,663 Jews lived in Biłgoraj County, in the Lublin District, constituting about 46 percent of the total population. When World War II erupted, there were 498 Jews living in Goraj a small town near the county’s northern boundary, some 24 kilometers northwest of the town of Biłgoraj.
