The total cost of this transport for 1013 passengers (1,000 Jews, plus thirteen Schupo police guards), was 2,950 reichsmarks. The invoice, after being approved by the Gestapo, was passed on to Hans Biebow, the chief of the Nazi administration of the Łódź ghetto. “Transport XXXI,” left in the morning of March 24, 1942.
On March 21, the authors of the ghetto chronicle recorded "the joyful word" that, owing to Rumkowski’s intervention, the deportations would cease: "This was not unfounded because at his (Rumkowski's) behest commander Rozenblat and counselor Rozenstein drove through the ghetto since the early morning hours spreading the news that there would be no more resettlement transports." People subsequently celebrated on the streets, hugging and kissing one another. However, the news held only until 6:30 P.M., when the Jewish ghetto officials had to proclaim that the deportations would continue, even on Sundays. The following day, extensive rumors of a lasting change in German deportation policies spread through the ghetto. Józef Zelkowicz, who worked in the archives of the Jewish ghetto administration, recorded the rumors in his diary. On March 24, he mentioned three possible changes. The first one suggested that a meeting took place on Bałuty Square on March 23, where Rumkowski and representatives of the German authorities discussed the deportations. This resulted in the decision that the transports would continue without break until April 3, with one thousand people being deported every day. The second version suggested that no date for the end of the deportations was given but Rumkowski had still been ordered to deliver the continued amount of one thousand deportees per day. As for the third version, Zelkowicz wrote: "The third version is terrifying: not until April 3 and not a thousand every day, but rather Litzmannstadt is to be 'judenfrei' by... May. According to this version, there is to be a formal expulsion of all the Jews. If this is true, we will envy those who were deported before because they had a means of transportation and now everyone will be sent away on foot." ...
