The total cost of this transport for 316 passengers (303 Jews, plus thirteen Schupo police guards), was 1,180 reichsmarks. It should have been less, but the 50% mass reduction of 2.95 per deportee usually only applied for a minimum of 400 deportees. The Reichsbahn therefore wrote to the Gestapo that it had calculated the price for 400 deportees in order to grant the reduction. The invoice, after being approved by the Gestapo, was passed on to Hans Biebow, the chief of the Nazi administration of the Łódź ghetto.

“Transport XXIX” is recorded as having left in the morning of March 22, 1942. The Germans removed 303 Jews from the ghetto. March 22 was a Sunday. According to the ghetto chronicle there should not have been any deportation train on that day. There are two different versions of how this came about. On one hand, the ghetto administration was informed on Saturday, March 21, that there would be no more deportations. The people who had already registered were sent home. Then, shortly afterwards, the administration was ordered to provide another contingent of 11,000 Jews, starting on Monday, March 23. On the other hand, the chroniclers also recorded that on Saturday, March 21, the Jewish authorities were ordered to provide a regular contingent of 1,000 deportees for the next day, Sunday, March 22. However, according to the above-mentioned invoices from the Reichsbahn, there can be no doubt that there were continuous deportations throughout the month of March. Furthermore, several witnesses—such as Stanisław Zawadzki from the village of Zawadka (Streiten), who worked on an estate in Powiercie—testified after the war that he saw transports arriving every day. ...
