As was written in The Chronicle of the Lodz Ghetto, the preparations for the deportation began on February 12, when the Judenrat had to prepare the deportation lists. The initial list had 3,000 names and included the following: 300 men who worked in pumping sewage and bringing it to the main manholes; 300 additional people who had committed various felonies; those receiving welfare benefits; reserve workers; and some Jewish police informers, among them the well-known Mr. H.G. (who remains anonymous). Although the deportation was planned for February 14, it was postponed to February 22. According to rumors in the ghetto, there was a temporary halt in deportations due to a stop in the railway traffic, and there were even those who claimed that the deportation had been canceled. A total of 1,016 Jews were deported on the transport that left on February 23. The number of deportees is noted in the payment request — sent by the Reichsbahn to the gestapo of Litzmannstadt — for transporting Jews from the Łódź ghetto to Chełmno in February 1942. The tariff per Jewish deportee was 2.8 reichsmarks; that of a guard (i.e., one who returned to Łódź) was 8.4 reichsmarks....
