A third “individual transport” set out on July 31, 1944, from the Netherlands to Theresienstadt, comprising one person only: Theodor Ernst Heymann. That day, a regular transport with 213 persons aboard also headed for Theresienstadt, and both reached their destination two days later on August 2. Theodor Ernst Heymann (b. March 3, 1892, in Berlin) was the son of Jews who had converted to Christianity. He served as a German pilot in World War I (1914–1918), was seriously wounded (80 percent disability), and left the service with the rank of captain (Hauptmann der Fliegertruppe). He received first and second class Iron Crosses, the pilot’s decoration, and the Honor Goblet (Ehrenbecher) award. He was even recommended for the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern (Hohenzollern-Hausorden). In 1921, Heymann married Johanna Charlotte Katharina Therese Antonie Helene von Cramon. She was the daughter of General August von Cramon, the descendant of a military family from the Prussian aristocracy that could trace its lineage back to the 14th century. The couple gave their two children an evangelistic upbringing. In 1934, Gestapo operatives arrested Heymann but his wife’s family managed to free him quickly. In 1938, he immigrated with his family to the Netherlands where he established a corporation (Balta nv) for trade with the Danube countries that, among other things, sold weapons to the Dutch East Indies. Heymann had a German passport and, due to his connections in Germany, he exported merchandise to that country as well....
