Głusk, located on the outskirts of Lublin, was occupied by the Wehrmacht on September 18, 1939. At that point, the town was home to 530 Jews.[1] Under Nazi occupation, it was administratively assigned to the Zemborzyce gmina (municipality), in the Lublin County of the Lublin District.

Emil Ziegenmeyer was appointed the Lublin County Governor.[2] No ghetto was established in Głusk, and the local Jews stayed in their homes until the deportation in October 1942.[3] Rabbi Simcha Bienm Szafirsztejn acted as the Head of the Judenrat of Głusk, one of whose tasks was to provide groups of Jews for forced labor.[4]

On April 21, 1942, SS-Sturmbannführer Hermann Höfle, who served as head of the Jewish affairs desk of the Chief of SS and Police in the Lublin District (SSPF), Odilo Globocnik, requested lists with the numbers of Jews in all the municipalities of the Lublin County, as well as information about the numbers of Jews able to work, the numbers of their family members, and the number of those unable to work.[5] This laid the groundwork for the subsequent deportations to the death camps during Operation Reinhard. According to the information submitted by the local administration in the Zemborzyce gmina in May 1942, there were 749 Jews in the municipality of Zemborzyce, including 350 Jews who were able to work.[6] On July 19, 1942, SS chief Heinrich Himmler ordered the completion of the extermination of the Jews in the General Government by the end of the year. Only a small number of vital Jewish workers would be allowed to remain alive beyond that point.[7]...
