Kitów is a village in the Sułów gmina (municipality), some 60 kilometers southeast of Lublin. In 1921, the village was home to nine Jews, and there were 143 Jewish residents in all the villages of the gmina.[1] The Wehrmacht occupied the area in September 1939, and the Nazis regained control over it the next month, after a brief interlude of Soviet rule.[2] Under the Germans, the gmina was administratively assigned to the Zamość County of the Lublin District of the General Government (the part of occupied Poland that was not officially annexed to the Reich).

In January 1949, the Polish municipal authorities estimated that there had been eighty-three Jews living in the Sułów gmina on the eve of war.[3] A 1940 list of Jewish residents of the Zamość County villages, found among the documents of the Lublin District Governor, indicates that, at the time, the village of Kitów was home to eight Jews.[4] Pesze Gotlib, the Feigenbaum family, the merchant Itzhak Feiner, the Goldapper family, and the Blaukopf family lived in the village. On April 28, 1941, the JSS committee in Zamość sent an invoice for the financial aid received from the JSS in Krakow. This was the only time that the JSS in the Sułów gmina received aid, and the only reference to that gmina in the JSS documentation.[6]...
