Documentation of the State Extraordinary Commission for Investigation of Nazi War Crimes in the Soviet Union (ChGK), 1943-1945 regarding crimes carried out in the Voroshilovgrad Region
During the occupation of the Kadievka region <...>, the German invaders committed numerous monstrous atrocities. They brutally mistreated the innocent residents of the town and the region, and subjected the Soviet citizens to inhuman tortures and beatings, shooting people, throwing them alive down mine shafts, and driving them into buildings that were then detonated. The Fascist monsters spared neither the women, nor the elderly, nor the children. They would often leave the bodies unburied, and prevent the victims' relatives and friends from burying them. <...> Thus the Commission carried out partial exhumation and examination of the bodies from the graves where the soviet civilians shot by the Germans had been buried: <...> from the antitank trench located between the Almaznaya railway station and Kadiyivka town, <...>. The medical expertise commission <...> notified that after examination of 58 corpses that belonged to the soviet civilians found in various places of the anti tank trench near Almaznaya [railway] station it was stated that all these civilians had undergone the most sophisticated tortures and had been beaten by the German Fascist executioners. <...> The witness M.B. Ovcharenko testified: "Being present around 100 meters from the antitank trench where the Germans shot to death the soviet civilians from submachine guns in January-February 1943, I saw that they, our soviet civilians, were tied together in groups of 10. The Germans did it apparently, so that nobody could escape".
