Murder Story of Lebedin Jews at the Former Cheremushki Military Camp

Murder Site
Cheremushki Former Military Camp
Ukraine (USSR)
In March 1943, after the Jews had been forced to move into the dormitories, only the Jewish women were allowed to buy food. Then, under the pretext of evacuation to a separate Jewish settlement, the forty remaining Jews were taken to the military town of Cheremushki in the south of Lebedin, having been ordered to bring their valuables along with them. Once in Cheremushki, they were taken to a pit that had been dug in advance, forced to strip naked, and shot dead by the Germans, who used machine guns.

Documentation of the Extraordinary State Commission for Investigation of Nazi War Crimes in the Soviet Union from 1943-1945 regarding crimes committed in Lebedin
All the citizens of Jewish nationality were among those shot and executed in the town of Lebedin. There were forty of them – including toddlers, children, elderly people, pregnant women, and disabled individuals – and they had all lived there before the occupation. One of the victims was the 68-year-old dentist Isaak Khalonovich Livshmak, who had worked at the Lebedin clinic for thirty years. He perished together with his wife, daughter, and granddaughter. Another victim was the 62-year-old physician Krishak, who was killed along with his family (a total of seven people). The Krishak family included his two orphaned granddaughters, aged eight and six, the children of his late daughter. We can also mention the watchmaker, who was killed with his family – his pregnant wife and their two-year-old daughter. Furthermore, after the beginning of the occupation the Germans ordered the Jews to wear yellow stars on their chests, and failure to wear this badge was punishable by death. Two Jews were hanged for this offence; one of them had the last name Yutkevich, while the name of the other one remains unknown. In March 1942, all the Jews were taken to the military town and shot dead, and their valuables were looted.
