In January 1942, the Jewish refugees who had fled to Karan before its occupation were shot at the Karan railway station. According to Soviet reports, the number of victims is 214, while according to other sources the number varies from sixty to 260.

Anton Krotov, who was born in 1899 and lived in Karan during the war years, testifies:
Upon their arrival at the Karan [railway] station in October 1941, the German authorities began to carry out shootings of peaceful Soviet civilians, POWs, and Jewish evacuees.… In January 1942, the Jewish evacuees, a total of 214 people, were shot. These included children and adults, men and women. All these people were shot at the Karan station.
