Murder Story of Staro-Shcherbinovskaya Jews at the Staro-Shcherbinovskaya German Police Station

German Police Station in Staro-Shcherbinovskaya
Russia (USSR)
After occupying the village of Staro-Shcherbinovskaya, the Germans rounded up the local Jews and forced them to perform hard and dirty work. On September 8, 1942, the Germans arrested some twenty Jews and political opponents of the Nazis (e.g., Communists and Soviet POWs), and led them from the German police station to a pit that had just been dug by POWs. The victims had to strip naked and lie down in the pit. The German soldiers then proceeded to shoot them with machine guns. Those who had merely been wounded were finished off with rifle butts. Afterward, the German occupiers covered the pit with a layer of soil, left their shovels and bullet casings there, and looted the victims' clothes and possessions.

During the occupation of the village of Staro-Shcherbinovskaya by the German-Fascist invaders, my daughter was arrested…. On September 8, 1942, at 8 AM, she was questioned. After the questioning, she was taken into the courtyard. I was permitted to go to her, and she could tell me that she had been severely beaten, but had not renounced her Komsomol membership. Then a vehicle arrived, and she, along with Shulgoy, was forced into it. They were told that they would be taken to Plavy. Instead, they were driven to the German police station, where she was made to join a group of about twenty Jews, some of whom were children. They had to march on foot along the broad highway, which was guarded by German policemen. I followed behind them. Then, a German soldier hit me with his rifle butt, and I fell down, but I eventually recovered and resumed walking after the crowd of arrestees. On two occasions during our march, we were overtaken by numerous vehicles, which were transporting other victims to the execution site. When we arrived at the site, the pit was already dug, and the twenty-two arrestees were ordered to strip naked and lie down alive in the pit. My daughter lay down in her skirt. Once everyone was lying in the pit, the Germans opened fire with machine guns and shot all the victims dead, finishing off the survivors with rifle butts. After the execution, the killers sprinkled some soil over the pit, left their shovels and bullets lying there, and took away the victims' possessions. We wished to dig up the grave, but were afraid to do so.
