According to the report of the Soviet Extraordinary Commission for the Investigation of German Crimes, in July 1942 at least several dozen “peaceful civilians,” most probably Jews, were shot near a ruined brick factory on the outskirts of Kupyansk. The shooters appear to have been members of the German Secret Field Police who were stationed in the town.

…On May 23, the Commission examined… a pit located on the outskirts of the town, near the ruins of the brick factory. This was one of the earliest shooting sites in the town. According to the testimonies of the citizens, the shootings here took place in July 1942. The bodies were buried not very deep, at a total depth of 30-40 cm. Because of this, most of the bodies were found in a state of complete decomposition, and could not be identified. 34 skulls, including 9 female ones, were found in the pit….
