In November 1941, the German administration of Konotop ordered the local Jews to assemble at a certain point in the town, bringing their valuables along. The Ukrainian Auxiliary Police then escorted the Jews, who numbered about 1,000, to the local airfield. There, they were shot dead by a squad of the 1st SS Infantry Regiment.

After that, mass arrests of the peaceful population began. At the same time, all the Jewish residents of Konotop – 280 families, up to 1,000 people in total – were arrested. The arrestees were initially put in the prison. Then, when it became full, they were housed at the POW camp. <...> The mass shootings took place <...> at the airport <...>.
One grave has been discovered at the airport, and the bodies in it are those of Jews who were shot.
Throughout the period of the occupation of the town of Konotop, from September 1941 to September 1943, the German authorities executed as many as 30,000 people, including as many as 3,000 innocent civilians. Of the latter, as many as 1,000 were Jews.
