Murder Story of Novo Zavedenskoye Jews in the Anti-Tank Trench at the Novo Zavedenskoye Railway

Murder Site
Anti-Tank Trench at the Railway near Novozavedennoye
Russia (USSR)
Shortly after the occupation of the village of Novo Zavedenskoye, the German military issued an order, requiring all the Jewish evacuees in the village to be registered on August 26, 1942. At 7 AM on August 26, 1942, the Jewish evacuees came forth to be registered. At that moment, three vehicles drove into the courtyard of the German headquarters in the town. More than a hundred Jews were loaded onto the trucks. The German command in the village, along with the local policemen who were collaborating with the occupiers, told the Jews that they would be taken to the village of Georgiyevsk. Instead, the trucks drove to the anti-tank trenches next to the railroad, and the Jews were shot dead there. In September, probably between September 11-15, and on December 15, 1942, the Germans carried out additional raids and searches in the town, trying to find hidden Jews. According to the testimonies of the survivors, the local antisemites informed the Germans that there remained hidden Jews in the village, and so the German soldiers and local policemen carried out two raids in those days. All the Jews found in these operations were executed at the same anti-tank trenches near the railroad. The number of these victims is uncertain.

State Extraordinary Commission for Investigation of Nazi War Crimes in the Soviet Union (ChGK) documentation dated 1943, regarding the murder and persecution of Jews in Ordzhonikidzevskiy Kray, 1942-1943
I am telling you about the torture of the Jews during the temporary occupation of our village in the Soldatsko-Aleksandrovsky County, in August 1942, after our forces had temporarily retreated from the North Caucasus. At that time, I lived in the village of Novozavedennoye, in the Aleksandro-Obilensky County. There were some Jewish families from Leningrad living with us. Approximately on August 21, 1942, the German army entered the village in the Soldatsko-Aleksandrovsky County. On August 26, the German headquarters ordered the Jews to come forward to be registered, and informed them that they had to work for the Germans. Since all those people knew the German language, they had to work for the Germans. At 7 AM on August 26, many families gathered for the registration. A vehicle, which was nicknamed “Black Raven” (this was the name of the punitive squad), arrived at the headquarters. One vehicle [from the squad] was closed, while the other two were open, and there were many people there. The people were dragged into the vehicles and driven away. Some people [in the village] said that the arrestees had been taken beyond the railroad, where trenches had been dug, and that these innocent people had been executed there. The adults were shot dead, while the children had their lips smeared with poison, and so they died. On that day, at least a hundred people were executed. The individuals who did this were our fellow Russians, who had betrayed us to the fascists, having previously suffered repressions. Then, between September 11-15, 1942, the fascist beasts found some other hidden Jews, one of whom was a friend of mine.
