Murder Site
Soldatskoye
Russia (USSR)
After the occupation of the village, the Germans forced the Jews to perform hard labor and tortured them whenever they could. The Jews' property was looted by German soldiers. Then, in September 1942 (according to Soviet sources, it was on a day between September 12-15), the German commander ordered 269 Jews to assemble at the storage barn of the collective farm. They were beaten and robbed during the night they spent in the storage barn. On the next morning, the Jews were herded into some vehicles and taken in the direction of Soldatskoye, under a cordon of local policemen. A little while later, the convoy halted, and the Jews were shot dead in a pit next to the road to Soldatskoye. The shooting was carried out by German soldiers armed with machine guns, with the assistance of the local police.

Mariya Shevchenko, who lived in Imeni Molotova Kolkhoz during the war years, testifies:
State Extraordinary Commission for Investigation of Nazi War Crimes in the Soviet Union (ChGK) documentation dated 1943, regarding the murder and persecution of Jews in Ordzhonikidzevskiy Kray, 1942-1943
Sometime between September 12-15, 1942, the citizens of Jewish nationality, who had to live in harsh conditions, doing hard labor, were taken to a storage barn in the center of the collective farm. Then, one night, the barn was cordoned off. On the next day, all [the Jews] and their belongings were loaded onto horse carts and sent in the direction of Soldatskoye. The policemen guarded the Jews, but were forbidden to rob them. All the Jews were crying, convinced that they were about to die. Comrade Ger, who was carrying her child, kept crying all the way and complaining about their predicament and about her husband, who was away in the Red Army. She calmed her child, saying how unlucky they were to find themselves in this situation, and I also calmed her as best I could, but I felt ashamed of my inability to help.... All of them were shot dead by the fascist animals.
