In December 1942, the Germans began to arrest and kill Jews all over the Zelenchuksky County, and their mobile killing squads entered Nizhniy Arkhyz, as well. There were 21 Jewish children at the local orphanage. One Jewish child was hidden and saved by the Russian children. The perpetrators led the other 20 Jewish children out of the building. They forced the children into a gas van, where they were gassed to death.
