Murder Site
Stalin Collective Farm near Staromayevskoye (Gas Vans)
Russia (USSR)
At 10 AM on a certain day in September 1942, the local police squad rounded up 233 Jewish evacuees from all over the Staromayevsky County and took them to the German headquarters in Staromayevskoye. The Jews were then herded into two gas vans, which had been provided by the German mobile killing squads. The Germans divided the group and drove the vehicles to the collective farm named after Stalin, where a pit had been dug in advance. There, they opened the cargo holds and dumped the bodies into the pit.

During the German occupation, in September 1942, we began to dig in our garden at 10 AM, and then three Germans showed up and chased us away from our work. They dug a pit not far from our garden. Then, we witnessed the arrival of two covered vehicles and a truck, carrying the bodies of people who had been gassed. We stepped away, watching the proceedings.... They began to unload the bodies from one vehicle, 83 gassed individuals. I counted up to 150 people [bodies], but could not observe the bodies being dumped into the pit, as I was afraid that one of the Germans might notice me.
