On September 17, 1942, a German killing squad arrived in Pelagiada [Palagiada].

They arrested six civilians, including Communist Party members and some Jews. The arrestees were taken to the banks of the lower channel of the Chla River. After being beaten by the Germans, these six civilians, five of whom were Jews, were ordered to dig their own grave. The Germans then shot them dead, and residents of Pelagiada were forced to bury the bodies.

On September 17, 1942, upon the orders of the German district commander Brandt, a mobile killing squad arrived in the village of Pelagiada. [This squad] arrested and shot [some civilians] at the lower channel of the Chla River. Here are the names of some of the victims: Yekaterina Matveevna Rubalskaya, secretary of the village council (born 1913); her mother Pesya Rubalskaya (born 1875); Nadezhda Solomonova (born 1916), and Afanasiy Evlampevich Ivanov (born 1925). Apart from the abovementioned citizens, two more people were shot dead: a man and a woman from another village, whose names are unknown. Before the execution, all the victims were beaten by Gestapo men, and they were then forced to dig a pit. After the execution, residents of the village of Pelagiada were ordered to bury the bodies of the victims in that pit.
