Murder Site
Serbinovka Ravine
Ukraine (USSR)
The Jews of Barashi and some nearby villages were shot in the Serbinovka ravine, that was located 3-4.5 kilometers west of Barashi and 1.5 kilometers from Simony village. According to some sources, in the morning of the day of the murder operation seven Jewish men were forced to dig a pit at the site and were shot after they completed the task. The rest of the victims were forced to march to the site while guarded by local policemen; the women and children were transported by cart. After being wounded, some of the victims were buried alive. The murder operation took place either on October 19 or on November 1, 1941. The number of Jews shot to death was reported as ranging from about 40 (in contemporary Soviet reports) to 100 (according to later sources). According to some documents, the victims included 15 Jews from Novoaleksandrovka.

From the article by V.Danyuk "Why Were the Infants Shot At?":
…That fall as many as 350 people, mostly children, women, and old people of Jewish origin were shot in front of our eyes. We, shepherd children, witnessed that tragedy. I do not remember the date, but I do remember the day. In the morning the weather was clear and warm but it became cloudy in the evening. Around 3-4 in the afternoon the Fascists were forcing along a column of people. First, we thought they were POWs, but when the column got closer to us ,we saw that they were civilians. Many of them were our fellow villagers. Olya Voloshina, a pupil from our school, was among those marching in the column. I knew her rather well, we used to be together in pioneer camp. Our eyes met but she did not say a word. Later, they said that before the shooting some one shouted " We will be avenged!" Perhaps those were her last words. The Fascist deceived victims, who were told that they were going to be sent to Palestine. However, a pit near Simony had already been dug for them. The column turned right and, when the people saw the fresh pit, they understood what was going to be done to them. They began screaming and the shooting started. We did not take our cows back to the village, but watched the guarded women and children being transported by carts. I will never forget two women I saw sitting in a cart with their young babies. One of them was feeding her one -year-old infant milk from a bottle while the other one was breast feeding her baby. They held their babies tight and gazed at them with love. They had only a few minutes left to live; they could hear the sounds of shooting and knew where they were being taken but remained faithful mothers until the very end. When we brought our cows back to the village, we saw the people crying and this was very frightening.
