The Germans carried out the first large-scale anti-Jewish operation in Werenów in the first half of November 1941. That month, the Germans arrested the Jewish refugees from Vilna who had fled to Werenów at the peak of the mass shootings of Jews in that city. On November 14, they were shot near the Werenów railway station by Lithuanian auxiliary policemen.
